Life after the slug

I was wondering how I’d cope if my slug suddenly gave up the go, and have been considering some alternatives for the past couple of months.

The best of these so far seems to be to get an Asus EEE Box, remove windows and replace with a linux distro, probably Ubuntu or Gentoo though I’ve also been considering whether or not I’d install a console only flavour of unix and carry on using it as a server only.

The EEE-Box…

Eee-Box

is low powered, reasonably priced and isn’t too large – seems a viable alternative when my Slug finally goes.  Hopefully it’s got some life left just yet, though I do make it work hard 😉

WordPress upgrade

I’ve upgraded wordpress to the latest version.  Everything looks ok from what I can tell – the theme still works fine and all the links and posts look ok.

If you find anything odd with the site, please leave a comment and I’ll try and rectify the issue.

I spotted a few peculiarities with the rounded corners and the rendering in any webkit based browser so I’ve corrected this.  It now uses a CSS based corner technique using a transparent circle image, rather than the JQuery corners plugin.  This should be cross browser compatible.  If the page looks a little weird when it loads, hit refresh as its probably using a cached CSS.

Website fixup

So – I think I’ve finally managed to clear up the last few issues for the presentation of the website now.

The list of changes is quite long and includes:

  • added/updated main CSS
  • Changed a few wordpress templates
  • Removed post/page empty lines (no longer needed)
  • Added Links
  • Changed the logo

I’ve tested these changes mainly in firefox 3, though I’ve run a very quick test in IE7 to make sure it all looked ok.
I’m sure when IE8 is released, I’ll be re-doing some of the CSS to make it work in that!

Once I’m confident the theme is working correctly, then I might release it.

Forums

I’ve added some forums to the website to allow the discussion of NSLU2 information and anything else.

The forums can be accessed either from the menu bar at the top of the screen , or by following this URL:
http://forums.pembo.co.uk

The forums are currently quite bare and need branding – hopefully they will grow into a useful resource, though they require users for that!
Please feel free to register and post any questions be they NSLU2/Slug related or anything else.
